Nutrition 101



What is Good Nutrition?

Good nutrition is defined as consuming the proper nutrients and calories one needs each day to mainintain weight and health. For children this is important for their growth.


Simple sugar carbohydrates include candy, cakes, cookies, ice cream, etc. These foods can feel like they elevate your energy and than provide a sudden crash.

When it is possible 100% whole wheat is the best to incorporate into a diet.

Fiber s a digestion resistant carbohydrate
Soluble fiber--lowers cholesterol, and helps control blood sugar levels
Insoluble fiber--lowers gastrointestinal problems, & prevents constipation


High quality complete proteins are: meat, milk, some dairy products, eggs, poultry, & fish
Low quality proteins are beans, nuts, peas, lentils, fruits, vegetables, and grain products.


Besides the above plant based proteins vegans can also try texturized vegetable protein (TVP) a soy protein based that can be added to smoothies, shakes or even in meals.
