Magnesium Deficiency

This weekend one of my friends was put in the hospital with some health problems. One of the concerns was repleting their magnesium level. This made me want to learn more about magnesium the signs of problems with magnesium and how to make changes in nutrition habits.

Some of the symptoms to look for regarding magnesium deficiencies include: muscle cramps or spasms, facial tics, poor sleep, chronic pain, fibromyalgia,  eye twitches, or other eye movements.

Did you know that dark colored sodas contain phosphates. When soft drinks are consumed on a regular basis the soda binds with magnesium inside the digestive tract, rendering it unavailable to the body. By drinking soda with meals you are flushing magnesium out of your system.

Eating sweets such as cake, candy, and other desserts are made with refined sugar. Refined sugar is a magnesium product--it also causes the body to excrete magnesium through the kidneys. The process of producing of refined sugar from sugar cane removes molasses, stripping the magnesium content entirely.
Anti-nutrients replace whole nutritious foods in the diet, yet actually consume nutrients when digested, resulting in a net loss. All foods require vitamins & minerals to be consumed in order to power the process of digestion, its important to choose foods that provide our bodies with the vital nutrients we need rather than filling it with crap. The more sweet foods our baked foods that you have in your diet , the more likely you will develop a magnesium deficiency.

Coffee,  Tea, or other caffeinated drinks when consumed daily can alter magnesium levels. Magnesium levels are mostly controlled in the kidneys, the kidneys filter and excrete magnesium nd other minerals. Caffeine causes the kidneys to release extra magnesium regardless of body status. If you drink coffee, tea, or other caffeinated beverages on a regular basis the risk for magnesium deficiency is increased.
